WOMEN IN SCIENCE

Scientists of the present and of the past for scientists of the future!

A collection of biographies designed, written and illustrated by women, and dealing with the important role of female scientists in the history of science. The biographies of some of the most famous women are here presented in an elegant collection aimed to interest and inspire girls in their early teens. Titles include scientists in different fields and historical periods, such as Marie Curie, Lise Meitner, Dian Fossey , Margherita Hack, Vandana Shiva and many others. These women have indeed given a decisive contribution to modern science, but their life is also seen from a personal, social perspective that encompasses human relations, passions and pastimes, and, finally, a social commitment to the peaceful use of their research and discoveries.

Flowers in the family - by Elena Accati
The latest addition to this series traces the life of Eva Mameli Calvino, mother of the well known Italian writer Italo Calvino. Her life was dominated by a passion for research. She was the first Italian woman to obtain a degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Pavia in 1907, and then hold a chair in botany, aged 29, at the University of Catania. Her life was full of turns and achievements: she moved to Cuba where, with her husband, she helped local farmers to learn how to make better use of the lands. Once back in Italy, she founded the first floriculture lab in the Riviera, which soon became one of the leading laboratories in Europe.
